EDI Training for NHS Trusts

We provide practical Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training and support for NHS Trusts, including clinical and non-clinical teams, managers, workforce and organisational development teams, education departments and senior leaders.

Where EDI Can Make a Difference

NHS Trusts bring together large and diverse workforces while providing services to communities with different identities, experiences and needs. EDI can influence workforce culture, communication, leadership, accessibility, patient experience, decision-making and the way inequalities are recognised and addressed.

Workforce Culture

Support inclusive working relationships across clinical and non-clinical teams, professions, grades and services, including responses to discrimination and exclusion.

Patient Experience & Communication

Consider how communication, assumptions, cultural context and service design can affect the experiences of different patients and communities.

Disability & Accessibility

Strengthen understanding of disability inclusion, reasonable adjustments and practical barriers affecting staff, patients and visitors.

Leadership & Organisational Practice

Connect EDI with leadership behaviour, workforce development, governance, service improvement and organisational priorities.

Who We Support

Our support can be tailored for clinical staff, non-clinical and operational teams, managers and team leaders, executive leadership, workforce and organisational development teams, HR and people teams, training and education departments and other patient-facing services.

How We Can Support Your NHS Trust

You may already know the training topic you need, or you may be exploring a wider issue such as race equality, disability inclusion, workforce culture, patient experience, inclusive leadership, mental health or communication across diverse teams. We can help you identify an appropriate starting point and tailor support to the roles and services involved.

Support can range from a single training session to a programme for different staff groups, or wider work reviewing EDI priorities, policies and organisational practice.

Tailored EDI Programmes

Some organisations need more than a single training session. We can develop a programme that brings together different EDI topics for different audiences, helping learning connect with leadership, service delivery, workforce practice and wider organisational priorities.

Content can be adapted to reflect your setting, the roles attending and the issues you want delegates to explore. Training can be delivered face-to-face or online via Zoom or Teams.

Race Equality, Workforce & Patient Experience

Race equality in healthcare can involve both workforce experience and the way services are experienced by patients and communities. Training can help teams explore racism, bias, communication, cultural context, barriers to speaking up and the importance of responding appropriately to concerns without assuming that people from the same racial or cultural background have the same experiences or needs.

For organisations wanting a more focused route, our Anti-Racism in Health & Social Care training can be used alongside wider EDI development.

EDI Reviews, Strategy & Organisational Support

Support can extend beyond training. We can work with organisations that want to review current practice, strengthen their EDI approach or identify practical priorities for further development.

EDI Review

Explore policies, practice, culture and available evidence to identify strengths, potential barriers and areas for development.

Policy & Practice Review

Consider how equality and inclusion are reflected in relevant policies and everyday practice and where further development or specialist advice may be useful.

EDI Strategy

Develop practical priorities and actions aligned with your organisation, workforce, communities or service users and wider responsibilities.

Ongoing Development

Use follow-up training, review and support to build on progress and respond to emerging priorities.

Equality, Inclusion & Organisational Responsibilities

The Equality Act 2010 provides an important framework for equality and discrimination in employment and service delivery. NHS organisations also work within wider national and local equality, workforce, governance, patient-safety and service-improvement arrangements. Training and review can support understanding and development, but should not be presented as guaranteeing compliance or particular workforce or patient outcomes.

Good EDI practice is broader than legal compliance. It also involves considering culture, accessibility, representation, belonging, communication, decision-making and whether different people can access services, participate and progress without unnecessary barriers.

Where formal legal advice is required about a specific situation or obligation, appropriate specialist legal advice should be obtained.
